The Baker’s Dog Dozen – A Give Away – Submit Your Litter Theme Idea (TIME’s UP!)

Posted on February 20, 2009

In celebration of our brand new litter of 12 perfect puppies we want to give away some FREE STUFF courtesy of The Baker’s Dog!

Nobody involves you in the puppy growth and development process like we do at Woodcrest, and right now we have a very special assignment for you. We want YOU to decide the litter theme for our 2009 Striker x Kadie litter.

What is a litter theme?

A litter theme is a nice way of linking all the puppies from the litter together even after they go to their new homes. In most cases we use the litter theme to pick the registered name for our puppies that we keep for show. Many puppy buyers choose to pick the registered name for their puppy based on the litter theme also so that their puppy is always connected back to the litter-mates. A litter theme can be as simple as a single word, a phrase, a descriptive term, or anything else you want it to be.

For example, the winning theme on our last litter born on April 1st was ‘April Fools’ and we named our Roxy, Woodcrest Roxy’s Foolproof Strategy. The litter before that derived their ‘Summertime’ theme from their mother’s call name of ‘Summer’ and our Dreama out of that litter is CH Woodcrest Midsummer Nights Dream.

Sometimes litter themes are derived from the parents names. Striker, BIS US/CAN CH Penaire Star Struck at Woodcrest, is the sire of this litter. When he was a puppy the theme for his litter was ‘Star’ which we will not duplicate, but you could derive many themes from ‘Star’ or ‘Star Struck’ or ‘Striker’ which might be interesting. Kadie, the dam of this litter, is CH Stargus Ayesha and is a daughter of Int’l CH Stargus Galileo x UK CH Stargus Athena. Feel free to try to incorporate any themes you can think of from there.

A litter theme can be anything, there is infinite possibility. We do have some guidelines for you though. Many, many other breeders use movies, books, and songs for their themes/registered names/call names so we want to stay away from that. We want the theme to be unique, something nobody else has used. So be creative! Also, many other breeders use cutesy names and themes, we prefer something…less flowery…more dark and twisty. We will not use themes that we have used in the past or that other breeders we know of have used.

That being said, there are no rules, so feel free to break any outlined here! Be crazy, be creative!

Who can enter?

Anyone, there are no restrictions. ANYBODY can participate, other breeders, previous puppy buyers, future puppy buyers, lovers, haters, lurkers, anyone and their little dog too…

How do I enter?

You can submit as many ideas as you can think of, there is no limit. Include the reasoning behind your idea if you want. Submit your litter theme idea as a comment to this post (include your email, which will NOT be published, so that we have a way to contact you if you win). We will take entries up until midnight on Thursday, March 5th, 2009. We will select a winning theme and a runner up based on creativity and appeal on Friday, March 6th, 2009.

What could I win?

As the Airedale Terrier originates from Yorkshire, England how about……..
    1. Names based on Shakespearian plays/characters?
    OR
    2. Names associated with the Yorkshire Dales. Apart form the obvious Airedale, there is Calderdale, Coverdale, Clapdale, Wensleydale, Wharfedale and quite a few more! Also the Dale towns of Skipton, Ilkley and Harrogate, Skipton, Settle of which there are so many to choose from……..

How about an Amethyst theme, the February birthstone? Here’s some interesting info on the gemstone:

“The name “amethyst” comes from the Greek and means “not drunken.” This was perhaps due to a belief that amethyst would ward off the effects of alcohol, but most likely the Greeks were referring to the almost wine-like color of some stones that they may have encountered. Its color is unparalleled, and even other, more expensive purple gemstones are often compared to its color and beauty. The color purple is traditionally the color of royalty and amethyst has been used since the dawn of history to adorn the rich and powerful monarchs and rulers.”

I could see some dark and twisty play on amethyst. Of course if you prefer to use the word Violet, that would be cute too.

Good luck naming those ADORABLE pups.

How about a tech-oriented theme. You’ve promoted this contest on Twitter, so that would be pretty cool.

Twitter, Tweet, Twhirl, Twinkle, Twitter Meme

    A few ideas:

    - Mardi Gras

    - writer Langson Hughes was born in February – his poetry provides some amazing name possibilities (as does his background, full name, so many possibilities with a Langston Hughes theme)

    - Aperitifs (e.g., Martini, Cinzano, Gancia, Campari, Cinzano, Byrrh, Suze)

    - Film Noir (could use movie titles (Slightly Scarlet or Blue Dahlia), characters/actors, movie plots)

  13. Lincoln
    Feb 24, 2009

OK. Since these pups are related to me, and since this month marked the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln, and in honor of the historic election of President Obama (even though Abe was the 1st Republican president and I am a very Republican Airedale), I would like to suggest Lincoln’s Legacy as a theme.

Part of the dam’s mother’s name is Athena, which makes me think of mythology.

Mythology makes me think of the Titans.

    There are 12 Titans:

Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion,Iapetus, Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Tethys, and Cronus.

And there are 12 puppies. :-)

I wouldn’t necessarily just use the Titans’ names for the puppies. A few of them are nice, but most of them are, well, a bit odd. But maybe continue with a mythology theme? Gods & goddesses?

Thanks for having this contest. Looking forward to seeing the result!

12 ACC schools and it’s basketball season. That’s some real champion status. There is also the Big 12, but these little fluffy joy slobber monsters are winners, so I’d name them in honor of the ACC. Michael Jordan, Dean Smith… anyone? Or you could use a non-sports icon from each school. There’s Thomas Jefferson who founded UVA, Charles Kuralt from UNC and so on.

Norse mythology: the 12 sons of Odin

Paradise Lost has 12 books. Everyone loves Milton.

    12 colors: 3 primary, 3 secondary, 6 tertiary

Old Testament: 12 sons of Jacob, 12 tribes of Israel

12 days of Christmas and the “youngest” pup can be called Epiphany.

Western and Chinese Zodiac both have 12 signs. They were born right after the Chinese New year.

The heart chakra is a 12 petaled lotus. A lot of good loving language can come from Sanskrit.

I’d also like to credit these ideas to my pooches who are 120 lbs and 60 lbs respectively, both weighing in at multiples of 12.

As Kadie is the daughter of Galileo, and Striker is in the “Star” litter – how about something related to Galileo being considered the father of modern astronomy? The Roman Catholic church charged him with heresy for his theories, including that the planets revolve around the sun.

    So…

    - Solar System (Sun, planets, moons, etc.)

    - Galileo Galilei (Heresy, Italy, Astronomy, Heavens, the four moons of Jupiter, etc.)

    HI,
My suggestion for a theme is the English Rose.
English being Kadie’s nationality and Rose after you know who!
As well as being the highly scented, vivid flower, an English Rose is a complimentary description of an English lady of fair complexion. The latter is intrinsic to English romantic imagery.
This link takes to some English Roses, grown just 10 miles from where we live.
    http://www.davidaustinroses.com/english/searchlist.asp?stype=name&byname=English%20Roses
(if link doesn’t work, just type in David Austin Roses)
You must admit this theme is a bit different.

    Kind Regards
    Chris
