The Baker’s Dog – Biscuit & Treats Review
For the past two weeks we have been evaluating The Baker’s Dog line of dog biscuits and treats. The Baker’s Dog, a pet bakery located in Myrtle Beach, SC, has 10 plus years of experience baking pet products. As you can see these treats drew everyone’s attention right from the start.

You can see the full line up of The Baker’s Dog products on their website. Here are the items that we have been evaluating:
1 lb Peanut Butter flavored crunchy biscuits
1/2 lb Apple Cinnamon flavored crunchy biscuits
1/2 lb Peanut Butter & Honey flavored soft, wheat free, corn free treats (allergy friendly)
Puppa’s Pizza
Bark-B-Que Beef Ribs
Nom-Nom Sandwhich

The crunchy Peanut Butter flavor was the first we tried out. I used these as treats while we were at dog shows in Florida with Ava and Stark. I would fill up my jacket pocket each morning and use them for rewards throughout the day for good activities. Ava would eat them up on the spot while Starky preferred to hold on to them until she got back to her crate and then savor every morsel. That difference has more to do with the personalities of the two dogs than with the treats, both enjoyed them equally and would sniff away at my pocket throughout the day to let me know they wanted another. I even tested these treats out on some random dogs at the dog shows, whose handlers didn’t mind the distraction, and each seemed to approve enthusiastically. Nitro also enjoyed the crunchy Peanut Butter flavor, but really fell for the crunchy Apple Cinnamon a similar style biscuit with a different flavor.

Every time we cracked open the bags of these treats Nimue made sure she was on hand to participate in the tasting. The Apple Cinnamon were by far the most interesting to me because they just smelled wonderful. Every time we opened this flavor I started to get cravings for Apple Pie or Strudel. The crunchy Peanut Butter flavor was much less fragrant having just a hint on peanutty smell, while the soft Peanut Butter & Honey had a lovely sweet and nutty smell. In all, just what you would expect from a gourmet baker.

Although none of our dogs have food allergies we were especially looking forward to trying out one of the allergy friendly flavors from The Baker’s Dog. I have to say that at first I was skeptical whether the allergy friendly treats would be met with the same enthusiasm as the regular treats. As it turns out, the soft wheat free corn free Peanut Butter & Honey flavored treats were the biggest hit of all. Nimue who is especially skeptical of anything new took to these right away. Although she had already been a fan of the crunchy Peanut Butter treat, she couldn’t get enough of the soft treats, to the point that given the choice between the crunchy and soft varieties she chose the soft treat every time. Perhaps she felt they smelled or tasted better, but I have a feeling the soft treats were just easier on her sensitive old teeth and because of that I’m glad we had the opportunity to evaluate both the crunchy and soft varieties. Needless to say the soft Peanut Butter & Honey were Nimue’s favorite.

The specialty treats were the only items that were met with some reservation by some of the dogs. I successfully predicted how each dog would react to these items ahead of time, everyone has their own preferences, even dogs. Nimue is a chocolate fiend and by that I mean that she can sniff out the tiniest morsel of chocolate from three houses down, find it, and eat it despite my protest. We all know that chocolate is bad for dogs and there has been more than one scare for Nimue to the point that chocolate has been banned from the house…for the most part. Anyway, the Nom-Nom is yogurt filling sandwiched between two wheat free corn free cookies and dipped in carob, a chocolate alternative that is safe for dogs to eat. True to my prediction Nimue reacted to this imitation chocolate like a bride who discovers her engagement ring is genuine cubic zirconia. It was a flat out refusal and let’s just say her disgust at the entire situation wasn’t pretty.

The question was who would be the taker on this one. Ozzy stepped up to the plate, he was easily convinced of the Nom-Nom’s worthiness. Nimue didn’t turn down all the specialty items, however, she was a huge fan of the Bark-B-Que Beef Ribs. Kadie was the lucky winner of the Puppa’s Pizza which she (and her ultrasound pups) enjoyed thoroughly, the extra crunchy texture of this treat kept her occupied for a few seconds longer than normal. Overall the specialty items all found their way to an enthusiastic taste tester. I think most pet owners are able to predict what their dog prefers and will be able to find something extra special for their special pooch in The Baker’s Dog lineup of specialty items.

For anyone concerned about feeding their dog Peanut Butter flavored treats right now due to the recall, you can feel at ease with The Baker’s Dog line of dog treats, even the Peanut Butter flavored items. Straight from The Baker’s Dog in response to the peanut butter recall:
You can confidently buy The Baker’s Dog Treats without worry. Here’s why:
We’ve got a confession to make. Our peanut butter treats don’t actually contain peanut butter! We grind the dry roasted, unsalted peanuts ourselves. Why not just use “real†peanut butter? Well, the only difference between ground peanuts and peanut butter is the added salt, high fructose corn syrup, oils, and sugar. Yucky stuff, that you basically don’t want your dog to have. Keep this in mind if you give your dog peanut butter from a jar and be sure you’re using organic, no sugar added peanut butter!
This is real proof that you are getting a great product from The Baker’s Dog. Quality pet food makers care about the ingredients that go into their treats because each of those ingredients will be eaten by your dog. All products are made with human quality ingredients with no added salt, sugar, or preservatives and are low fat and low calorie. The Baker’s Dog even carefully selects ingredients for an allergy friendly line of treats that contain no wheat and no corn.
Don’t let your kitty feel left out, The Baker’s Dog even has something special for them too.

Overall, The Baker’s Dog has an excellent lineup of treats and we highly recommend them. The dog biscuits that are the staple of their lineup of products are wonderfully complemented by the individual specialty treats. The quality of each item is excellent. The packaging is beautiful and easy to use. Biscuit bags stood up to repeated opening and closing. It is obvious that The Baker’s Dog cares about the products they are making and cares about your dog too. Even after all this testing I still have treats left, so you don’t need to worry about these treats not lasting! The treats are a steal at just $9.99 for a 1 lb bag that contains about 100 biscuits or $5.99 for a 1/2 lb bag.
Beyond their high quality products, what sets The Baker’s Dog apart from the competition is the incorporation of your own photos on the packaging. You can upload any photo to their website and purchase treats that are personalized with your photo. The process is extremely simple and the result is beautiful. If you don’t have your own photo you can still select your favorite from a variety already available, including our Nitro! These personalized treats make excellent gifts at the holidays or as a favor at your next dog themed event.
