2009 Striker x Kadie – Ultrasound Photos!
Kadie’s ultrasound was by far the most interesting one we’ve had. I will preface my excitement by saying that we live in a very rural area and it has come to our attention on more than one occasion that some of the Veterinary technology in the area is slow to be updated at times.
That being said, Plymouth Veterinary Hospital in Plymouth, NH now has a spankin’ brand new ultrasound machine and it is an amazing piece of machinery!
Previously, the ultrasound machine that we had experience with gave us a simple picture that would be like watching static on your television screen, but as you pass over a puppy there would be a black blob. We would count the black blobs and that’s how many puppies we used for our estimate.
It was just a couple months ago that I saw ultrasound pictures that looked somewhat similar to a human ultrasound machine and realized how wild we would all go for ultrasound photos. Well, to our surprise, we all got our wish today at Kadie’s ultrasound.
The equipment was so new that they had not finished all their training on it yet, but were happy to give it a try for us. Unfortunately they were not able to burn the images for us to take home, but I had my trusty camera with me to get some photos, although not as crisp in the low light conditions as I might have hoped.
The picture quality was outstanding on the machine and does not translate entirely in my photos. Staff at the hospital gathered around to view the actual bodies of the puppies inside the sacks that would have been simple black blobs on the old machine. We even saw beating hearts.
The photo above is perhaps the best one I captured of the puppies. The photo shows two sacks, the left sack you can see the back feet of the puppy inside. The sack in the center you can see the whole puppy. The puppy’s head is on the left end and the body to the right. You can count the four feet.
In response to our amazement over the quality of the image the Vet even joked, “look girl parts!”
In all we counted definitely 6 puppies. As always this is just an estimate. We can end up with more or less than this number. We have our fingers crossed for a couple more, but we will take healthy, happy puppies of any number.
There are a few more photos in the litter’s gallery section.
More info about our 2009 Striker x Kadie breeding. These puppies are due on February 19th.

Thanks everyone! It was a great surprise to be able to use the new ultrasound equipment and wonderful to see the actual puppies. We can’t wait for the next ultrasound when they are trained on the machine.

Our ultrasound photos have generated some thoughtful discussion over at Twitter, thanks everyone!
@jswo asked “Can you *really* see the puppy on the right? I can see the 2 feet on the left, but nothing on the right.
”
I’m sure many of you have the same question. My photos did not capture the image as well as you could see it in person. Remember I was using a camera to take a photo of a computer screen in very low light since the lights were turned off and with no flash.
You could really see the puppies and recognize their shape just as well as a 40 week ultrasound in a human which makes sense because both are done at half way through gestation.
If you’ve ever been to an ultrasound you know how the machine can show different depths. I never got a good picture at the perfect depth with my camera. In the photo above the depth was zoomed out more than I wanted.
As I said they had not finished their training and I fully expect to have really interesting photos at the next ultrasound we do with them.
In the time being, if anyone has any links to better images on new ultrasound equipment please post them in a comment so we can all compare them.
Thank you everyone for your interest in this topic. I’m glad to see that we aren’t the only ones mesmorized by ultrasound photos.

Kadie and Striker do it again!!! We’re really excited here about the coming litter of brandy-new Airedales, Fergus and Tory especially as it’ll be new half-brothers and sisters for them.
I bet they will be just beautiful little bundles of Airedalian joy…
